Tourist Attractions

Gundagai is a great location for tourists and has many points of interest for an enthusiastic sightseer. These locations include the statue of the Dog on the Tuckerbox, the statue of "Dad, Dave, Mum and Mabel, and two bridges of historical significance.

The Dog on the Tuckerbox was unveiled on the 28th of November in 1932. It was built because back then, a dog always accompanied the peoples wagons when they made a journey inland. A poet once saw one of these dogs sitting on a tuckerbox and found the sight amusing, enough to write a poem about this dog. Since then, many poems and songs were written about the dog. It became such a popular topic, there was a statue made out of it.

"Dad, Dave, Mum and Mabel" are very well known fictional Australian characters from Steele Rudd's On Our Selection Novels. Since then, there have been many films, TV shows, comics, even jokes inspired by these characters. The statue of "Dad, Dave, Mum and Mabel" was built as a tribute to these popular characters.

There are two, well built bridges in Gundagai that are very popular tourist attractions. These are the Prince Alfred Bridge and the Railway Bridge. The Prince Alfred bridge was built in 1867 and was the first easy way for people to cross the Murumbidgee river. Today it is the longest timber bridge in Australia, measuring 921 metres from one end to another. The Railway Bridge was built in 1902, and is another bridge recognised for its length, at 819 metres.
